with the obama administration it would be hard to say he had a woman problem. nevertheless, the fact is, we need to keep in mind especially at this pivotal time extent there's a problem with women, news stories saying women are, perhaps, more reluctant to take jobs that require longer house than we've seen anne marie slaughter article at that. we need to keep that in mind. you and i both, as fathers of young children, see how difficult it can be to do anything @after 5:00 p.m. if you're concerned with a child to the extent that burden falls disproportionately on women and we need to keep having that conversation so i'm glad to see that come up. >> and we have to talk about diversity of political opinion. on the issue of women, go back to president obama's first term welcome a large group of women, leaders, who were then his cabinet and within the white house, gather with him to say, we may be here but we want to be heard. there was an uprising at the very beginning. and then now, look at who's leaving. hilda solace, the department of labor, first latino secretary of labor, extremely progressive.

there is a potential right now. yeah. and the obama administration should have seen this coming. they could have somehow and still can send out signals of what they intend to do with these higher decisions and the departure of nancy ann diparlo means there have got to be more women in the pipeline that the obama administration will appoint. i don't see how they can't be doing it because women were the backbone of the obama support for reelection. >> if we look at modern times and what past precedences have done, we look at president george w. bush increasing the number of women in his cabinet for 19% of his first term and the 24% in his second. president bill clinton saw the percentage of women rise from 27 to 44%. do you think that this could be the first time that we don't see the needle moving forward for a second term administration if president obama doesn't make some really sharp moves now to correct the diversity problem? >> think the pressure will be on for him to make sure that we don't see white men across the board the way we've seen in these early appointments. this is the piece of t

house administrations, president obama is gearing up to play tough on the debt ceiling. and msnbc contributor, not a handwriting analysis expert, but we're going to ask you about it anyway. a really out john hancock for jack lew. but he's been in and out of washington for the '70s. he's been involved, jared, in balancing the budgets. as the gop is going to push for budget cuts to coincide with three more cliffs over the budget, how critical is jack lew going to be to the president in waging that fight? >> highly critical in precisely the ways you mentioned. by the way, i think it would be cool. we had that at the bottom of our currency. although i suspect he could change his signature for that. one of the things we know about jack lew is that he's been a tireless fighter to protect key areas of the budget, particularly where they affect economically vulnerable people. he's been a staunch defender of medicare, medicaid, of social security when it comes to economically vulnerable retirees. and the president has been forthright about this, a balanced plan going forward will involve s

for president obama as he was pushing this forth in his new team. early january he might put this out in the first week of his new administration. is the iron so hot at this moment that he really does have to strike here and now? >> because there are republicans worried about the future of their party if they don't do something, because it surprised me frankly after this election you didn't hear what you've heard after a few republican losses that there wasn't anything wrong with the party per se. neath needed to message it better. on immigration it was just the voices calling for the -- calling for the preliminary opposition to any reform, much quieter than they have. we don't know if we're going to hear them bring it up again when the house comes back. a lot of people in the tea party movement, very influential in the base, very influential because the base agrees with them, weren't really loud on immigration, but back when we talked about 2007, people like steve king were at the forefront of stopping this, and we're going to start hearing from them again. we'll see if there's enoug
